Alight Motions Object/Element Menu, Explained Simply
Alight Motion and clicked on the "Object/Element" section you’ve likely seen four options. Camera, Null, Empty Group and Element/Project. And wondered what they actually do. They don’t appear on screen like a text or image layer does. That’s why they seem confusing at first.. Once you understand what each one is for they become some of the most powerful tools in your entire project.
Camera
This one is pretty clear once you try it. The Camera layer gives you a virtual camera you can move through your project in 3D space. You can push in pull back pan from side to side tilt up or down or even orbit around your subject. Without a Camera layer you're stuck animating layers which becomes very hard if you want that cinematic look. Like the camera moving through a scene. Add a Camera layer switch your layers to 3D mode and suddenly you can create parallax depth slow pushes or orbiting shots that make your videos feel professional instead of flat. If you’ve ever seen a video where the camera seems to fly past the text that’s where it starts. With a Camera layer.
Null
A Null might seem useless at first. Once you use it you’ll never want to work without it. It’s a layer. It never shows up in your final video. But you can attach other layers to it as a parent. Say you have five elements that need to move rotate together or scale together as one group. Of animating all five separately. Which means you’ll probably get the timing off. You animate the Null once and everything parented to it follows automatically. It’s like a control for a group of layers with no extra visual clutter in your project.
Empty Group
This one is not about adding effects. It’s about keeping your project organized. An Empty Group works like a folder. You can drop layers into it to keep items together. Like all your text layers in one folder and background elements in another. Once things are grouped you can apply an effect a mask or a transformation to the group all at once. No need to repeat the change on every layer. If you’ve ever opened a project and had no idea which layer did what using Empty Groups is the best way to avoid that mess going forward.
Element/Project
This last option lets you bring in another project or composition as a single layer in your current project. It’s also called nesting. Of rebuilding the same complex animation over and over in different videos you build it once as its own project. Then you can drop it into any project as a single reusable Element. This is a time-saver for things like intros, outros or any effect you use across multiple videos. You only update the project and every place you used it updates automatically.
You won’t use these four tools on every edit.. When your projects get more complex they solve real problems. The Camera layer lets you create 3D movement and depth. The Null keeps layers moving without extra work. The Empty Group keeps your timeline tidy.. The Element/Project saves you from rebuilding the same thing over and over. They might look like the invisible corners of the Add Layer menu. But honestly they do more behind the scenes than almost anything else, in the app.
