Alight Motion is a mobile video editing app in India. Alight Motion is free and powerful allowing you to create professional‑level edits on your smartphone. I have used Alight Motion for years and learned many techniques. I am sharing all of these techniques in detail here so whether you are a beginner or someone who wants to improve your editing skills Alight Motion can help you.
First open Alight Motion and tap "New Project." Choosing the aspect ratio is very important. For Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts pick a 9:16 ratio. For YouTube videos pick a 16:9 ratio. Alight Motion will adjust the project length automatically when you add clips. You can also set it manually in the project settings if you prefer.
After you create the project learn about "Layers." Layers are a feature of Alight Motion. Every video clip, image, text and effect sits on its layer and stacks on the Alight Motion timeline. You can reorder layers to decide which ones appear in front in the video. The top layers appear in front on the screen while the layers below act as the background.
Keyframes. The Heart of Alight Motion:
Keyframes are basically the heart of animation in Alight Motion. All they do is lock in a property's value — position, scale, rotation, opacity, whatever — at one specific point in the timeline. Now here's the magic part: the moment you drop two keyframes, Alight Motion fills in everything between them on its own. Say you want your text to slide in from off-screen and land right in the center — just set the first keyframe with the text pushed off the edge, then a second one with it sitting in the center. That's it. Alight Motion handles every single frame in between, smooth and automatic
Easing curves matter too. When you choose "Ease In‑Out " the motion feels natural and smooth. If you choose an easing the motion can look robotic and mechanical. Beginners can use "Ease In‑Out" as a default because it usually gives results.
Using Layers:
One advanced technique is to create a layer. A null layer is invisible. Acts as a controller for many layers at once. For example if you have five text layers, parent all of them to one layer. When you move that layer all five text layers move together. This saves time. Makes it easier to build complex animations.
Effects Transitions:
Alight Motion provides built‑in effects such, as blur, glow, shake, glitch and chromatic aberration. Open the Effects panel select a layer and apply the effect that you like. Each effect has its parameters intensity, duration, direction and more—so you can tailor the effect to your edit.
For transitions overlap the edges of two clips. Apply a transition effect. Zoom blur, slide and fade are choices. If you want something build a custom transition using keyframes.
Text Animation:
Text animation helps with videos, quotes, captions and many other edits. First create a text layer. Then set the font for the text layer. Set the size for the text layer. Set the color for the text layer. For animation use opacity keyframes to fade in the text layer. Use opacity keyframes to fade out the text layer. Alternatively use position keyframes to slide in the text layer. Use position keyframes to slide out the text layer.. You can even animate each letter separately. That looks very professional though it is a bit more advanced.
Color Grading:
Color grading is what sets the mood of a video. To start you add an adjustment layer. From there tweak the brightness, contrast, saturation and hue. To get that teal-and-orange look add a tint to the shadows. Then add a tint to the highlights as well.To give a vibe lower the saturation and add grain.
Audio Sync:
Editing that follows the music beat can make a video feel more engaging. I recommend looking at the audio waveform to find the moment the beat drops. When you add a transition or a text reveal, at those moments the edit feels more pleasing to watch.
Export Settings:
Once you finish the edit open the export settings.
